The Western Cape Home Schooling Association Newsletter
May 2000
Mission statement
So much has happened and such a wonderful time is ahead of us. There is lots
of news and views and interesting happenings, and unfortunately not enough
space in this newsletter to fit everything in. A very wise man once said that
we do not need to know everything, we just need to know where to find the
answers and this is what we will aim to achieve right here.
In February a new executive committee was elected for the WCHSA. We plan to
bring some excitement and stimulation into everything for 2000. Our mission
statement is as follows:
The WCHSA aims to represent all home schoolers in the Western Cape on all
fronts, including negotiations with authorities.
To support other home schooling groups and the Pestalozzi Trust.
To expand membership.
To advertise home schooling to the general public.
To get more people to home school.
To be a resource hub for home schoolers.
To foster home schooling support groups.
The Happy Home Schoolers do it again!!
If you are not part of the network already, this is going to make you wish you
were.
McGregor Camp
They went on a family camp in the mountains of Mc Gregor on
7-8 April, which is probably the cutest town this side of the north pole. And
truly, for the homeschoolers who went there it was the land of milk and honey.
In fact, it was the land of meat and honey, for dear Juliett bought enough
meat in Robertson to feed an army of Israelites. And there was enough for the
Philistines too. They ate Braaivleis for breakfast, lunch and supper. And in
the end there were twelve baskets of leftovers, and I have it from a reliable
source that some of the campers had Braaivleis (from the 12 baskets of
leftovers) up to a month after the camp. For those who were not so
carnivorously inclined, there were plenty of other things to eat.
Have you ever seen the dam at McGregor? It was the venue of the Happy Home
Schoolers non-annual, never to be repeated, totally spontaneous swimming gala.
AND nobody drowned. Talking about sport, they had a visit one evening by the
not-so-famous Captain Nemo (a.k.a. Vernon Hendrickse) who gave a very
uninformative (read: hilarious) talk on training for marathons. Etcetera,
etcetera!
THIS must be the most fun anybody can have without breaking the law.

JUNE MEETING
Now this is going to be totally amazing.
Date: 10th June at St Georges Grammar School in Mowbray. (See map below)
Registration starts at 13h00. Costs will be R40 per family for nonmembers, but
members will have free entry. Curriculum- and other vendors will have displays
out, and there will even be something for the children to attend and take part
in.
Starting at 14h00 we will have 4 interesting workshops running in parallel,
and each one will be repeated in the second half of the program. These
workshops will cover the following topics:
Curricula: Various types. Finding one that suits my familys needs.
Designing my own. Anne Marie Goemans and Wendy Young chatting about preschool
and beyond. The fathers role in home schooling. Brian Goemans will cover
this important topic with comments noted from Chris Clickas talk on the
subject.
Children with special needs. (This title will change) Juliett from the Happy
Home Schoolers Network, will host this exciting group, answering questions and
giving advice.
How do I get started in Home Schooling? So glad you asked. Christo Visser will
facilitate this group, sharing experiences and insights.
We are sure that this new format can bring a lot of excitement and be very
helpful so that we can all benefit . It is definitely in the best interest
of all homeschoolers to attend this meeting, as well as invite interested
friends and family.
Write this in your diary, put it on your fridge

The agenda for 2000
Well, next up is our Spring Fair in September/October.
Last year it was a raving success and we hope to have even more success this
year. More about that in the next issue.
At the end of this year we will once again have our annual prize-giving. We
will try and have this before the holidays start and we are sure to have an
even greater time than we did in 99.

The Happy Homeschoolers Network, which has a Christian
focus, is getting bigger and bigger, and organising excellent activities.
There is a limit somewhere in the size of any given group - the Happy
Homeschoolers Network draws members from all over Cape Town. It is the
intention of the WCHSA to foster and promote the establishment of homeschool
networks. If you are interested, why not start a homeschool network in your
area ?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------
